This small book (it slips easily into a trouser pocket) in the popular O'Reilly 'animal' series has, appropriately enough, a small kitten as its cover mascot. Its 80 pages (including a vital index) cover all the diagrams and the essential symbols and meanings of UML (up to 1.4 in this edition). It also manages, somehow, to squeeze in a helpful and sensible amount of explanation of the key concepts, such as instantiation, class, polymorphism, and many others.
